It is sjesa gelegen: presintative fersterking fan demonstrative ileminten yn it Westerlauwersk Frysk, it Sealtersk en oare talen
Abstract
This article deals with some aspects of presentative intensification of demonstratives in Frisian and other languages. Modern West Frisian shows the beginnings of the development of a paradigm of demonstratives (i.e. demonstrative pronouns and adverbs) intensified by the presentative sjuch ‘look’. Saterlandic, an East Frisian dialect, presents an even clearer example of this phenomenon; here we find a fullfledged paradigm of
demonstratives intensified by ke- (from the presentative kiek ‘look’). Similar instances of presentative intensification of demonstratives can be found in other Germanic and non-Germanic languages. The properties and the development of such intensified demonstratives are discussed in some detail.
