Abstract

Fishing has traditionally played a major role for the inhabitants of the North Frisian Islands of Foehr, Amrum and Sylt and the deep-sea island of Heligoland. As a result, the vocabulary of fish names in the Frisian dialect of these islands is quite extensive. This paper presents a largely historical-linguistic study and discussion of these fish names, comparing them from a dialect-geographical perspective with the neighbouring Low German and Jutish dialects, illustrating the close language contact there has always been between these dialects and Island North Frisian.
