Abstract
This article provides a general and amply documented overview of the use of the verb fu ‘to get’ in Fering-Öömrang (North Frisian), which, like its equivalents in the other Germanic languages, boasts a large variety of meanings and functions. Fu occurs as an inchoative and causative main verb, as a semi-passive, semi-active and causative copula, and as a semi-passive, aspectual (inchoative) and modal-aspectual (perfective) auxiliary. On the whole the use of fu in Fering-Öömrang is closely linked to the use of its counterparts in the neighboring languages Low German and Danish, but especially as a modal-aspectual auxiliary it seems to have developed some independent patterns of usage
