Het Middelfries Woordenboek (stand van zaken en toekomstperspectieven)

Abstract

In this article I discuss the Middle Frisian Dictionary project of the Frisian Institute of the University of Groningen. In §1. I define the period (ca 1550 - 1800) and give a survey of what has been achieved so far (i.e. textual editions, card index files, etc.). I also go into possibilities to switch over to more advanced computerised processing and editing techniques. At the end of the first section I discuss problems like the intended readership of a Middle Frisian Dictionary and, of course, the related problem of the dictionary's aims and organisation.
In §2. I present my ideas about what the particular dictionary entries should look like (i.e. what kinds of information are to be provided, what kind of lay-out is to be used, what spelling should be used for the main form, the language of description, etc.). § 3. consists of a sample entry (bliuwe), which is meant to illustrate the principles laid down in §2. In §4, finally, I return to the vexed problem of exactly how to spell the headwords (main forms).
