Abstract

This article discusses the question of the pronunciation of the word kryet/krie't, 3 sg. pres. of krite 'to cry’, in the work of the 17th century Frisian poet Gysbert Japicx. It is suggested that kryet/krie't was pronounced [krIt]. This pronunciation would reflect Old Frisian shortening of /i:/ to /I/. It is shown that the allomorphy in the verbal
paradigm of strong verbs resulting from this shortening process was still intact in Middle Frisian and early Modern Frisian, whereas nowadays it has been leveled out completely.
