Abstract

To date the story embedded in the Finnsburh Fragment and Episode has defied any
full elucidation. In this article I have raised two questions rarely if ever asked: how
does the treaty between Finn and his "Half-Dane" enemies operate? and why after
killing Hnæf, the Danish leader, does Finn send his own Frisian warriors home and
then safely spend the winter with these former enemies?
