Samenvatting

In or before 1966, in Knole (County Kent), Prof. dr Walther Steller saw a painting of
Franciscus Junius with the Earl and Countess of Arundel, painted by A. van Dyck (not to be confused with the so-called Madagascar painting from 1639, likewise by Van Dyck). In 1969 the first-mentioned portrait had vanished. Maria F. S. Hervey does not mention it in The life, correspondence & collections of Thomas Howard Earl of Arundel, "Father of vertue in England" (Cambridge, 1921). This contribution gives
passages from my correspondence with Steller in response to his somewhat cryptic
description of the portrait's vicissitudes in his article on Junius in Flecht op 'e koai
(Grins, 1970). The text of Junius' epitaph in St. George Chapel of Windsor Castle is
once again completely printed here, followed by a heraldic description of his coat of
arms.
