Abstract

A comprehensive dictionary of Old Frisian is one of the long-standing wishes
of frisistics. One of the reasons for the delay in compiling such a dictionary is
that a number of Old Frisian legal manuscripts have not yet been properly
edited. The situation with regard to editing the Old Frisian charters is much
better. This is one of the reasons why Vries (1990) launched a plan to compile a comprehensive dictionary of the language of the Old Frisian charters only, which would result in a splitting up of the Old Frisian dictionary. In this article I argue that there is little to be said for such a move. On the other hand, there are many arguments, both fundamental and practical, in favour of a comprehensive dictionary that covers all Old Frisian texts.
