Abstract

In 1992 a grammar of the Frisian language was published in Japan. This book,
which is the first systematic treatment of Modern West Frisian published outside
Europe, certainly deserves to be regarded as an important contribution to the
internationalization of Frisian studies. On the other hand, one should admit that this
pioneer work, lacking any predecessor upon which to improve, is not entirely free
from shortcomings. In view of the fact that there has already been a considerable
number of positive reactions to the publication of this book from all around the
Netherlands and especially Friesland, the following review article primarily intends
to offer some constructive criticism on several imperfections of it. It is hoped that in
the future another work will appear which will go further in fulfilling the demands of
the interested laymen and professional linguists in Japan.
