Abstract

The transition to a new millennium has been a good moment to strike a balance, in this article with respect to the question where Frisian lexicography actually stands, especially seen in the perspective of what is practically needed by the dictionary user. What has been achieved, and what should be pursued in the (near) future? The overview is mainly organised along the traditionally distinguished three Frisian language areas (North, East and West) and the more finer grained dialectical divisions made within these cover areas. Moreover, special sections are devoted to older periods of the language, to translation dictionaries from a foreign language into one of the varieties of Frisian, and to new technologies which may have repercussions for lexicographic policy and practice, like CD-ROM and the internet.
