Abstract

In this article first or revised etymologies are proposed for the following Modern West Frisian words: rêd ‘fourth stomach (of a cow)’, hoaie ‘host, entertain’, mâlbeare ‘make a fuss’, wrigge ‘devil, evil spirit’, foar(h)aad ‘headland’, papsûger ‘honeysuckle’, dûm ‘furious’, kening ‘king’, klyster ‘thrush’, snyl ‘leaf of water plants’, honke ‘sweetheart’, (lân)geanne ‘rejoicing’, dalje, deilis, deilje ‘blow; involved in a fight; to fight’ and freed ‘Friday’.
