Abstract

My article argues that in the set-up of the characters of the protagonists in
Reinder Brolsma’s novels and short-stories a marked change can be
discerned. I locate this change in the early nineteen-thirties and relate it to
a profound shift in Brolsma’s own outlook in life. Whereas the characters in
his early stories generally hold an optimistic and affirmative view with
regard to their plans and ambitions, in his later characters pessimism
prevails. This shift is most outspoken in the crippled ambitions and
aspirations that he furnishes his female characters with.
