Abstract

The two earliest epithalamia written in Frisian are “Ansck in Houck” and
“Woutir in Tialle”. They are commonly ascribed to the vicar Johan van
Hichtum. “Woutir in Tialle” was written for a marriage which took place in
1609. “Ansck in Houck” is generally assumed to have been written in the
same decade, though it is not known for which marriage. I argue, on the
basis of internal and external evidence, that “Ansck in Houck” was, in all
likelihood, written for the marriage of Carel van Sternsee with Luts (Lucia)
van Cammingha. This marriage took place in 1583 or earlier. This would
imply that the earliest Frisian wedding play is twenty-odd years older than
is generally assumed. Even then Johan van Hichtum might be the author.
