Abstract

This article examines the deaths of soldiers during the First World War. Through a case study of a German family, whose father died in the war, Hershey highlights the staggering number of fatalities and the profound impact this had on the lives of soldiers, civilians, and children. To illustrate this, he draws on letters sent by the father, Friedrich, to his family while stationed in Belgium.
