Inge Bleijenbergh and Conny Roggeband The necessary condition of equality machineries This article analyses the relation between political pressure of women and policy change in the field of childcare provision, parental leave and part-time work. Policy changes in six West European Welfare states are compared on the basis of Qualitative Comparative Analysis. The analysis shows that political pressure of women performed via equality machineries is a necessary condition for policy change on work and family life, while neither the presence of the women’s movement or women in national Parliaments are necessary conditions.
