This article explores the ways in which Christian pastoral care can navigate the ambiguous secular environment with respect to death and dying. It employs a method of ‘retrieval’ that attempts to orchestrate a conversation between theological key notions from the rich Christian past and contemporary Western culture. The second part provides an outline for a pastoral theology that enables end-of-life care and offers guidelines for guidance in situations of euthanasia.
