Samenvatting

The curse in Jeremiah 48:10 is often regarded as a later addition to the Moab oracle: prose instead of poetry, a sudden change of person, and an extremely vengeful mentality, are adduced to support this view. Closer analysis, however, reveals that verse 10 fits the context and may therefore not be a late insertion. Reception history shows that the chapter’s chilling imagery has figurative and literal applications. This article advocates a careful and hermeneutically responsible reading of this text by considering its literary, historical, theological, and redemptive-historical contexts.
