Samenvatting

This article reflects on the unique character of the sermon as one speech act amidst many other speech acts performed in this world by answering the question: How can the unique character of the sermon be characterized and safeguarded within this context? To safeguard the unique character of the sermon as a means of salvation, it is helpful to think and speak about the sermon sacramentally by considering three authors from the Reformed, Anglican, and Methodist traditions, each of whom has developed the concept of ‘sacramentality’ in relation to the sermon. Reflecting on preaching as a sacramental speech act has consequences for exegesis, application, and performance of the sermon.
