Samenvatting

The violent elements of the image of God of Isaiah 63,1-6 easily aggravate readers. In addition to the perceived tension between the God of the Old and the God of the New Testament, these and other astonishing descriptions of God in the Old Testament challenge readers’ conceptions of God. This article explores the prophet’s image of God in Isaiah 63,1-64,11, then compares this testimony with the New Testament’s God-talk, to show that the Old and New Testaments find their unity in a multidimensional image of God and reflect on what this God-talk means for the contemporary church’s preaching, prayer and pastoral care.
