This article advocates a pneumatological understanding of the authority of Scripture. John Calvin discussed the authority of Scripture in the introduction of the Institutes, but maintained that the testimonium of the Spirit and the autopistia of Scripture belonged to the soteriological work of the Spirit. Word and Spirit were also closely tied in the early church, for instance in the NicenoConstantinopolitan statement that the Spirit has spoken through the prophets. The pneumatological concept of Scripture’s authority strengthens the cause of the theory of ‘organic inspiration’ (Herman Bavinck) and is helpful in addressing the problems of a critical, though believing, approach of Scripture.
