Samenvatting

Reformed theologians wrote a significant portion of the literature about the Dutch
theologian Frans Breukelman (1916-1993) and the Amsterdam School of theology.
This article describes and evaluates six of the most commonly addressed matters
encountered in this reception history: (1) the ‘Amsterdam’ focus on the text, (2) its
political theology, (3) the hermeneutical relativization of historicity, (4) the centre of
Scripture, (5) Breukelman’s account of the Reformation, and (6) Breukelman’s ‘pietism.’ Although predominantly critical, the Reformed attitude to Breukelman and the
Amsterdam School of theology has not been without recognition and appreciation. In
fact, Breukelman’s work might be more in line with Reformed theology than has been
traditionally understood.
