Samenvatting

Numerous ancestral rites worldwide attest to the important role of the surrounding community. One such example is the rite of passage called kumukanda, the initiation of Basanga boys practised in the Kolwezi region of Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) until approximately 1970. Considering seven strong aspects of the kumukanda and the Biblical need of a triple transformation, this article outlines contemporary Christian initiation in DRC in order to help churches to accompany adolescents on their way to learn to walk with Jesus Christ. The article is the result of a practical theological research project in DR Congo from 2010 to 2013 by Lumbwe K.K. Roger, Mande L.K. Moïse and Matthijs J.C. Blok.
