Samenvatting

Since 2007, the Social Support Law (SSL) serves for the Dutch government as an instrument to
shape solidarity, a process in which the churches are invited to participate. The reconstruction of the vision of the Dutch government on solidarity shows that the government defends a policy that underlines the moral aspect of (voluntary and one-sided) solidarity. This policy will be effective only when people are motivated and not forced to be solidary. In the politico-social discussion about solidarity, the church can and may clarify that she stands in a long tradition of solidarity through (all kinds of) neighbour-love to which the Word of God and the example of Christ encourage. Because of the huge importance of that politico-social discussion, the church shall not give up the word ‘solidarity’, but shall use it in order to communicate with non-christians about themes as fellowship and cohesion.
