Samenvatting

The subject of this article is Nietzsches nihilism in relation to theology. Two outlines are helpful to get hold of the subject matter: Nietzsches nihilism as a problem for church and theology, and Nietzsches nihilism as a challenge for church and theology. In the first part of the article the essentials of his nihilism are discussed and in the second part the position of three Dutch theologians – K.H. Miskotte, W. Aalders and A.A. van Ruler – is examined. In which sense can their theology be considered as an adequate defence against the attack of Nietzsche on Christianity and biblical faith? The conclusion is that the cultural context has changed in a radical way, so that a new reflection on these themes is badly needed. At the end of the article some remarks are made to show the direction which theology has to go to be relevant in Western culture.
