Samenvatting

This essay examines Calvin’s theology of preaching. The focus on preaching in Reformed theology has to do with the shift in worship in the sixteenth century from a visual to a verbal mediation of God’s grace. Calvin’s concept of preaching is analyzed by means of a confession which Beza had incorporated in his collection of Calvins’s Epistolae et responsa (1575), the so-called ‘Summa doctrinae de ministerio verbi et sacramentorum’. Calvin did not underwrite this document, but it breathes his spirit. Although he did not write a homiletical handbook, Calvin did have in mind a homiletic of the Word and the Holy Spirit. Calvin’s preaching is evaluated as to its objective and subjective characteristics in the framework of the shift from visual to verbal mediation.
