Samenvatting

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of this journal I was asked to choose the most striking article in its history on the field of systematic theology, and to reflect upon it. I opted for one of the contributions which Cees Graafland made to the journal about Christian Faith (1973), the most important book of the influential Dutch theologian Hendrikus Berkhof. Graafland’s criticism of this work concerns mainly the process-character of its view of God’s revelation. This criticism rests upon the use of criteria that are supposed to be very clear: Scripture, and the reformed confessions. I argue that this is both attractive and impossible. And I recommend the board of editors to keep faithful to the reformed tradition, but in a free style, which is more realistic, but also promising
