Samenvatting

The year 2009 saw extensive media coverage of the 500th anniversary of John Calvin’s birth. This article reviews the publication and translation of primary sources regarding John Calvin’s life, works and development and considers the significance of the secondary literature published around 2009. Generally, research about Calvin focuses on all of his works. As his theology is a biblical theology, there is a proper awareness of the close connection between the Institutes and the exegetical works of Calvin. The view that Calvin’s theology is a system dominated by the doctrine of predestination is out of date. Today, attention goes in studying Calvin’s works much more than in the past to the historical context Calvin lived in. As a result, we can gain a better idea of the developments of Calvin himself.
