Samenvatting

This article discusses exegetical proposals by biblical scholars who combine a high view of
Scripture with a non-chronological interpretation of Genesis 1 and a symbolic or figurative reading of Genesis 2-3. The interpretations by these authors are evaluated from the perspectives of textual analysis, historiographical considerations, and the relation between biblical exegesis and the natural sciences. Although these interpretations do contribute to a better understanding of the specific nature of these chapters, none are regarded as entirely convincing. The conjecture is that a wish to solve the tension between the biblical text and the natural sciences could provoke these authors to say more than what confidently can be said based on the text itself
