Samenvatting

This article offers an analysis of the way in which the Dutch theologian Arnold Albert
Van Ruler (1908-1970)1 discussed the experience of faith (Dutch: ‘bevinding’) in the
reformed tradition, especially in the so called Further Reformation. Van Ruler is consistent
in his positive evaluation of ‘bevinding’, be it not without several critical remarks
and caveats. According to him, ‘bevinding’ is essential for the Christian believer. Van
Ruler describes ‘bevinding’ with a truly non sectarian, catholic allure. His plea shows
the way to strengthen the concern for the personal application of salvation in theological
reflection and homiletical and pastoral practice.
