Samenvatting

During all his life, Karl Barth was a deliberate confessional theologian who felt at home
in the Reformed tradition. However, he opposed a confessionalistic theology which
threatened to equate the confession with Scripture. This attitude led to his alienation
from other German Reformed theologians, but also to the common confession with
Lutherans in Barmen 1934. This paper both describes Barth’s way of confessing and
indicates main features of Barth’s doctrine of the confession. Basically, Barth considers
a confession as a commentary on Scripture by our spiritual parents, which instructs us
as to how to confess the Gospel today.
