Samenvatting

H.J. Iwand (1899-1960) was a systematic theologian and Luther-expert from Germany
who focussed on the actual meaning of theological decisions taken by the Reformation.
Characteristic of his approach was seriously tackling those facets of Luther’s theology
that had confounded the adherents of the modernity-oriented neo-Protestant Luther
interpretation, such as the doctrine of the bondage of the will. This specific approach
also provided Iwand with a critical stance towards a confessional-Lutheran interpretation
of Luther’s theology. The result is a rather unique hermeneutic theology for which
the Reformed coherence between extra nos and pro nobis is determinative.
