Samenvatting

The leading thought in the book of Ezekiel is the glory (kābôd) of YHWH. With only
one exception, all references to it have YHWH as their referent. With the exception of
the occurrence in Ezekiel 39:21, all references to YHWH are found in Ezekiel 1-3, 8-11
and 40-48. In these chapters, the glory of YHWH is always portrayed as a semi-independent being. The description of appearance, departure and return of the glory of YHWH shape the structure of the book of Ezekiel. Ezekiel may be seen as the father of Apocalypse. The visions of the Ancient of Days and the One like a son of man, as found in Daniel 7, have been influenced by the visions of the glory of YHWH in Ezekiel 1 and 8. The glory of YHWH — as found in the Old Testament — is applied to Jesus in the New Testament. Thereby indicating that Jesus shares in the identity of the God of Israel.
