This essay argues that Calvin’s Christology in its essence is defined by his Pneumatology. To that end it explores the concept of caro vivifica in Calvin’s eucharistic doctrine. Because of his participation in the life of the Eternal word the caro Christi has become life-giving, a reality in which Christians share when they receive his body
and blood in the Holy Supper. In both cases the Holy Spirit is the agent of mediation. The concept of caro vivifica clarifies Calvin’s Christology because he understands the Word Incarnate to be a channel of life. Thus, in relationship to the Supper we may speak of a Spirit Christology as a complement to a Logos Christology.
