Samenvatting

The history of the final text of Ursinus’ Commentary on the Heidelberg Catechism is
complicated. The influence of Ursinus’ student David Pareus (1548-1622) and other
editors is unclear. This article assesses the differences between the editions of the introductory paragraphs regarding the necessity for the believer to know his misery.
It demonstrates that the emphasis on the necessity of this knowledge before deliverance
differs in the versions, and relates these differences to the influence of the Lutheran
scheme of law and gospel and the introduction of the scholastic method in reformed
theology.
