This essay responds to actual questions about the reformed view of office in the church,
received by the editorial staff of this journal. What is the essence of church office and being
an officebearers? Developments, discussions and pragmatic decisions at recent Synods contribute to a sense of uncertainty and confusion regarding the proper place and task of the minister of the Word. Consequences of these decisions with respect to theologians who
graduated to a university in the applied sciences serve as a case in point. A biblical eorientation
is needed.
