Samenvatting

Psalms occupy a special position within the musical tradition of the church in the Netherlands. For almost 450 years Protestant services have sung versified psalms in the vernacular. The Genevan Psalter is a monument of the cultural and liturgical inheri tance of the Dutch protestant church. The new Dutch protestant hymnal Liedboek (2013) includes the complete Genevan Psalter (1967 translation) and psalms in other versifications. This is new in the history of Dutch protestant church music. This article will answer three questions: What is the musical background of psalm singing in the Netherlands? What kinds of psalm singing do we find in the Netherlands today? What can we expect for the future?
