Samenvatting

This article explores the validity, potential, and limitations of ‘translation’ as a common
model of contextual theology that promises to help theology to be locally understand
able and relevant while remaining faithful to the Gospel. It shows that translation itself –
in which both the original message and the receiving language as well as locally available
cultural forms are enriched – is a more complex process than is sometimes realised. As
such it is a crucial model for understanding contextualization and an important tool for
engaging in intercultural dialogue among different parts of the worldwide church.
Because there is also more to contextualization than the translation model can account
for, it needs to be enriched with other models for understanding contextualization.
