It is important to examine the questions of whether and how preaching is spiritual and experiential. This essay argues, first, that preaching is spiritual and experiential, based on the spiritual union with Christ as foundational for understanding of the congregation as the sermon’s addressee for a proper delivery of the Word of God. Thus, a spiritual tone in preaching is required. Second, the argument focuses on developing a framework for understanding how preaching is spiritual and experiential, by examining the relationship between Word and Spirit. By the power of the Spirit believers are led into the spiritual reality of the Word. Respecting the framework of this extra nos reality offers theological space for developing the effects of the Word in us by the Spirit. The last part of this essay develops the inner relationship with the transcendent kingdom of Christ in connection with questions about understanding of this world.
