Pastoral preaching aims for involvement in daily life. For that reason preachers must understand their calling to include responsibility for the hearers. That is, pastoral preaching is not about delivering a therapeutic encounter, but about embodying the paranetic discourse that permeates the New Testament letters, and has long been a vital current in the history of homiletics. Preaching is an art to be mastered through profession and experience. Its pastoral dimension includes three aspects: the communicative nature of preaching, the care for the listener through clarity and relevance in the performance of the sermon, and use of language which is sensitive to the hearers without losing the substance of the paranesis.
