Samenvatting

Reacts to editor Henk Kleijer's (1999) column Marginaal: Een weemoedig verlangen naar waardevrije wetenschap? (Marginal: A Melancholic Desire for Value-Free Science?), in which the concept of value-free (social) science is relativized and opposed to that of social relevance. Stressing that freedom of value is a basic characteristic of all honest science, methodological domains from which any external values must be absent are described: (1) the scientific (as opposed to the practical) description of a research question, (2) the actual research phase that follows the creative and value-imbibed phase of hypothesizing and research design, and (3) the presentation of research results. The last is deemed especially significant, and it is contended that well-designed research will leave no room for value-laden interpretations. It is concluded that freedom of values is pertinently not a scientific delusion, but a necessary characteristic. 8 References. S. Paul
