Samenvatting

The class scheme of R. Erickson, J. Goldthorpe, and L. Portocarero (1979) has become a standard measure for determining the class position of workers. However, this class scheme does not deal adequately with the structural changes in the postindustrial economy. Gosta Esping-Andersen (1993) proposed a better-suited alternative. Here, focus is on two of its elements. The analysis presents a coding scheme for translating job-scores of the Dutch occupational classification (SBC-92) into scores of the Esping-Andersen scheme. Then, this scheme is applied to changes in the employment structure of the Netherlands and its two biggest cities -- Amsterdam and Rotterdam -- 1992-1996. The changing class structure of the Netherlands and the differences between the two cities are documented, demonstrating their different evolutions. In Amsterdam, the class structure of the traditional industrial sector (the Fordist hierarchy) professionalized, while the class structure of the postindustrial sector (the post-Fordist hierarchy) polarized. In Rotterdam, the opposite was true. These findings are highly relevant for recent discussions in urban sociology, and illustrate the relevance of Esping-Andersen's class scheme, particularly since it can account for structural job changes related to the emerging postindustrial society. 4 Tables, 45 References.
