Samenvatting

Since Morgan the study of kinship systems has been one of the overriding concerns of the field of anthropology, to the extent that terminology in this field is hardly understood by anyone who is not in the discipline. J. A. Barnes in three styles in the study of kinship (London, England: Tavistock Publications, 1971), urges that a more general, theoretical approach be taken to the problem, whereas R. Needham in rethinking kinship and marriage, (London, England: Tavistock Publications, asa monographs 11, 1971), makes an appeal for a more specific approach based on intensive study of individual cultures.
