Samenvatting

Doubts about the validity of survey methods were discussed in an article by E. Brunt-de Wit entitled "Cijfers en twijfels in sociologie en anthropologie" (Statistics and doubts in sociology and anthropology, Sociologische Gids, 1972, 19, 1). Surveys on surveys show that the average housewife was interviewed 0.74 times in a 3-year period. This may lead to a condition known as interview weariness, as is suggested by research in which it was found that potential interviewees who had been interviewed previously were half as likely to allow themselves to be interviewed as those who had not. Furthermore, almost all surveys are done in the area of market research, and generally the r's are not told the purpose of the interview. More research must be devoted to questions which directly effect the lives of persons interviewed. Also, the interview should take place in a relaxed atmosphere where the interviewee feels comfortable. These and other measures should serve to reduce the occurrence of interview weariness. 2 tables.
