Samenvatting

A comparison of the educational attainment of nonnative & native Dutch-language speakers based on data obtained on 3 groups of primary school students: (1) monolingual Dutch (N = 32); (2) bilingual standard Dutch & local dialect (N = 75); & (3) bilingual in Dutch & one other language -- Surinamese, Turkish, or Moroccan Arabic (N = 39). The results show that language proficiency & effects of parental class are different for the 3 groups, while the effects of language proficiency on educational achievement are equal. Social class differences are found to explain 65% of the differences in language proficiency & educational achievement. 7 Tables, 2 Figures. Adapted from the source document.
