Samenvatting

To investigate how parents from different ethnic & socioeconomc groups motivate their children to do well in school, questionnaire data were obtained from parents & students in grades 6 & 8 (N = 4,000 Dutch & 500 immigrant) in 1988. Analysis shows that parents with high socioeconomic status show more interest in & visit the schools more often. Dutch parents visit more often than non-Dutch, although the latter give more encouragement to their children to do well: Dutch parents encourage their children to do better only when they are doing poorly, while non-Dutch parents urge their children to improve irrespective of their achievement levels. Little connection was seen between parents' motivating behavior & student achievement. 3 Tables. Adapted from the source document.
