Samenvatting

To investigate the validity of the common assumptions that Turkish immigrant families in the Netherlands are extremely hierarchically structured, & that a discrepancy exists between communication patterns in Dutch & Turkish, interview & participant observation data were obtained from 1 rural & 1 urban immigrant family. Turn-taking mechanisms & directives are compared with those for Dutch families. The results do not support the idea that rigid patriarchal hierarchies are dominant; communication patterns are similar to those of a lower socioeconomic class Dutch family. 7 Tables, 1 Figure.
