A criticism of Andries van den Broek's "Cohorten zonder generaties. Cohortvervanging en generatievorming in Nederland" ([Cohorts without Generations. Cohort Replacement and Generation Formation in the the Netherlands] see SA 43:2/9503309). Issue is taken with his definition of generation, deviating from scientific language usage. Moreover, he misrepresented key concepts of other scholars. Various theories & models of generations are reviewed. Three levels of abstraction about generations can be established in the literature: (1) ideal descriptions; (2) research hypotheses; & (3) case descriptions of individual life courses & perceptions.
