Samenvatting

An introduction to this special journal issue (see related abstracts in SA 44:5) notes that in the Netherlands, much attention is currently being given to the educational problems of youths from various immigrant communities, including Moroccans, Turks, Surinamers, Antillians, Moluccans, Southeast Asians, & Southern Europeans. Although none dispute that their achievement level is lower than that of ethnic Dutch children, many arguments take place over the extent to which cultural factors & unequal educational opportunities contribute to this situation. Immigrants often have great problems with the Dutch language. Moreover, their difficulties in adjusting to life in a new country make it difficult for them to tap into social networks. 4 References.
