Samenvatting

Explores whether social background has the same meaning for the children of ethnic minorities vs those of native-born Dutch in the Netherlands. Data obtained during in-depth interviews with Turkish, Moroccan, & Dutch respondents indicate that certain cultural practices within groups with a lower cultural background differ by ethnic background; eg, Turkish & Moroccan parents have poor knowledge of & a bad attitude toward the Dutch educational system, making it hard for their children to adapt to it. It is concluded that social background has different effects on the academic achievements of children from different ethnic groups, though differences are also due to cultural ethnic effects. 13 References.
