Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice or Microsoft Word file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); uses curved rather than straight quotation marks; m- or n-dashes rather than hyphens; and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.
  • If submitting to an article, files should be prepared for blind peer-review. For book reviews and essays this is not necessary.
  • References, bibliography, grammar, and interpunction follow the Chicago Manual of Style 17th edition (author-date)
  • I am aware of and agree with the publication of my article being licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0).
  • I added a short bio, institutional affiliation (if any) and ORCiD (if any) to my user profile.

Author Guidelines

Articles and all other relevant information are to be submitted through the electronic Open Journal Systems submission form, accessible via the button on the top of this page.

Krisis accepts articles in Dutch and in English. Articles that are considered suitable for the journal by the editorial board are double-blind peer reviewed by external peer-reviewers. Other contributions submitted for publication are reviewed by the editors.

Krisis accepts only original, unpublished material that has not been submitted for publication elsewhere. Authors intending to submit already published articles, or to use previously published material as part of an article, must indicate this intention at the time they accept the invitation to publish or, in the case of unsolicited articles, at the time of submission.

Krisis reserves the right to edit contributions. Authors have the opportunity to review corrections before publication, provided the articles are submitted to the editors in good time.

If an article, following acceptance, is not in substantial conformity with these guidelines, the editors reserve the right to return the article for revision by the author. Authors acknowledge that they may be waiving their right to review proofs prior to publication if the article is returned to them for revision to bring it into conformity with the guidelines. If an article is revised and resubmitted in time to allow the editors to meet their publication deadline, it will appear in the agreed-upon issue of Krisis. In other cases, the editors may reserve the article for publication in a later issue.

Citations must be formatted according to the Chicago Manual of Style 17th edition (author-date). Please follow the instructions and choose the ‘author-date’ tab.

Text must be saved in a simple format in one font size i.e. without automatic hyphenation, automatic indexing of section headings, with a consistent script and NO activated hyperlinks or other macros. Please use endnotes only. Preferred file formats are .docx, .rtf or .odt.

Maximum size of contributions, including notes and bibliographic references:

  • 8000 words for articles
  • 5000 words for essays
  • 2000 words for book reviews (4000 words for reviews of more than one book)

Separately, authors should supply:

  • An abstract not exceeding 100 words. For Dutch articles, a second abstract in English should be provided.
  • A short biography (affiliation, recent publications, e-mail address).
  • Relevant keywords (max. 6).
